The Pass
Tallows Beach
Australia is a big country but I found peace and quiet here in Byron Bay. I will not explore further since I'm on a strict budget and I'm saving money with the simple life I'm leading right now. I joined the local library and I can read tons of books for free. We are getting into the "Aussie Fall" with tropical rains and ideal temperatures during the day. At the end of March the winds should switch to consistent off-shores, which is great for surf. "The Pass" is crowded as usual, although I learned to time my sessions when the crowds are not at their peak. Yesterday Beau Young, son of Nat, was having a great time. He has been surfing every day for the past week and I'm just happy to be in the water and watch him surfing with effortless style. I'm reading local surf guides about the spots I'm surfing; the description goes from "sharky" to "very sharky"! Needless to say I'm a little bit concerned. "Cozy Corner" (Tallows Beach) is the spot with a real heavy shark-vibe; in the mid-80's a surfer got killed. I surfed the place when I could see a decent crowd and there was no other spot to be surfed for the day. Today I surfed at "The Pass" with a lot of dolphins, I had a great time. I took off on one wave, I cut back to avoid a big sea turtle and as soon as I gained speed down the line I had to face 3 dolphins jumping out of the water with their shiny bodies above the surface!
I keep experimenting with vegetarian cooking and the local market next to the house offers fresh veggies and fruit at reasonable price. Nocturnal marsupials occasionaly visit the house and I'm still amazed by the number of strange animals you can encounter. Another day in paradise.
